Recently, I noticed I’ve been a member of the New York Road Runners for ten years! Kinda crazy how time flies.
Kinda crazy how doing one sport over and over again never gets boring!
In honor of my tenth year of being a NYRR member here are ten ways my running has changed in the past ten years.
#1) I no longer run in cotton ever. Not even to catch a bus.
#2) When I’m injured I seek help. Old age made me realize I am not invincible.
#3) My favorite race distance was the 10k. It’s currently my least favorite race distance.
#4) I never ran for goal times until 2011.
#5) Pain wasn’t something I embraced, now it’s something I seek. I want my workouts to hurt, I want to test my limits.
#6) I strength train consistently.
#7) I know people at races!
#8) Fear isn’t something I run away from, it’s something I embrace.
#9) I respect the distance of the marathon, heck I respect all distances and train properly for them.
#10) Hot weather running use to be my favorite race day, training day and everyday temperature and now I embrace winter running.
How has your training changed in the past several years?

oh my goodness you look so young in that picture! I think that I first joined NYRR about 10 years ago. Actually 2002 since I ran 9 races that year so that I would qualify for NYCM in 2003. While I haven’t quite kept it up as you have, I think that my running has changed in many of the same ways. Cheers to 10 years!

10 years is amazing! Good for you! I can relate to SO many of the things you list like never, ever running in cotton or disliking distances you used to love! Running is life-changing and, I think, always for the better. I literally don’t know what I would do (both mentally and physically) if I couldn’t run! One of my goals is to run the NYC marathon. I’ve run 5 others, including Boston in 2007, but I now have toddler twins who take up a lot of my running time! Someday I’ll get there…
Thanks for the great post!

10 years – congrats! I used to be all running, all the time. I never did any cross training. In the past year, I finally embraced consistent cross training, and ow I strength train twice a week. Such a big difference in my performance and how I feel (and to be totally shallow, how I look too).

10 years that is awesome congrats! It is funny how much your preferences change over time, that is probably why the running never gets boring. I have complemented my running with a strong strength routine and regular yoga. I have found it has really improved my form and helped me remain pain free.

Congratulations!! I just got to the point in my life where I have been running more years than not…isn’t it wonderful to have a sport that you can keep up for so long?

Congrats on 10 yrs. with your club. I’ve been with mine for about as long, too, although I started running 5 yrs before that. In my time, I’ve seen huge changes to the culture of running. Used to be only a handful of people did marathons, now everyone and their brother does one. Also, lots more newbies in the fields and fields are just much bigger/more crowded. There’s lots more info available now than ever before. Some changes are good, some not so much!

Wow! That’s great. Ten years ago was the best of my racing career. Now, it’s something that I would cherish for the rest of my life. 😀

Congratulations on 10 years! I’ve been running for 4.5 and I noticed the other day that the COTTON, baggy capris that I bought originally for running – and did run in for a year – are not pajama bottoms. Also, I buy shoes because of how I run in them, not what they look like. It is fun to think of the progress!

10 years, that’s awesome! Congrats! My training has changed over the last couple years in that I have learned that consistency is everything when it comes to running and running with a group makes it SO much easier to be consistent.
