Ahhh, the glory of marathon week. This week is truly a runner’s dream. It’s packed with fun events for both marathoners and non-marathoners.
Obviously, I’m not running the race, but I am giddy with excited for everything NYC Marathon related this week.
The first event of the week is the Poland Spring Marathon Kickoff 5-mile race.
I ran this race just for fun and without a time goal. Which of course means I was placed in the sacred red corral.
I started the race out nice and easy with a 9 minute mile. The first two miles seemed to take forever. In my normal ADD state of mind, I got bored (who gets bored during a 5 mile run? what’s wrong with me?). I decided I was ready for the 5 miles to be over so I could watch and soak up the energy of the day.
I picked up the pace so that it was uncomfortably hard, but not so fast that I was sprinting. Soon enough the five miles were over and I was just another spectator.
I was happy to see both Rebecca and Ashley sprint by. But they were too speedy for me to catch on camera. I did however snap a photo of Manhattan’s cutest dog.
Official Race Time: 38:11 (7:38 pace)

Nice job!!! It was a gorgeous day. I think I may have seen you in the start corral..? Though I didn’t want to be all creepy and be like HEY I read your blog! :p

If you saw someone trying to stay at the very back of the red corral then that would have been me! Ever notice how many more guys are in the red corral than women?

GREAT job!!! You are so fast! I ran the race too, it was perfect. Ideal running conditions, beautiful day, so much excitement about the marathon.

Great job! Your time is amazing – and of course, I wish I were in the city soaking up all the marathon excitement.

I’m so mad I got shut out of The Poland Spring race! I ran 5 miles all by my lonesome on the East River this morning – thinking about all of you running this race. I almost hopped in as a bandit, but decided I’d feel too guilty/paranoid about not being officially registered. At least I know to sign up early next year.
Great race and great time! So speedy. 🙂

Congrats to you Jess!
So, Poland Spring is a real company? That’s awesome. I will still always think of Seinfeld though.
I would definitely get bored in the race as well. this is why I don’t like running in races. If I don’t have an iPod, or someone to talk to, I’m bored!

I love your posts…your observations and your honesty. I can so relate to you…
I know what you mean by wanting to speed things up just to get it over with…I felt that way with a spinning class this weekend. I had to play a lot of head games just to get through it.

I agree this week in NYC is electric. Foodtrainers’ offices are right across from the finish line and you can feel the energy. Great race, I should run so well while bored. I think you may be up for, actually you would kick ass with our November challenge, check it out. Well done.
