Getting to the Bottom of It: A Trip to Finish Line Physical Therapy

I’m bored with talking about my injuries so I’ll spare you the dramatic details of what’s been happening since I was side-lined from the New York City Marathon last year. What I want to share with you is about my trip to Finish Line Physical Therapy.

A few weeks ago I was tweeting about how much I loved my first experience on the Alter G at Equinox when Finish Line Physical Therapy reached out to say I was welcome to try out there’s.

Emailing with them led to signing up for a running gait analysis using the OptoJump technology. The OptoJump records you while running on a treadmill and then analyzes everything from your contact time on the ground and your flight time in the air on each foot to your stride angle. After the recording a Physical Therapist, Brynn went over all the numbers and explained what each one meant.

She even slowed it down to see if I was wearing the right shoes and if I was using my glutes properly (yes to one of those things and no to the other).

Ironically enough, the Alter G was misbehaving so I wasn’t able to use it which was the whole reason I was there in the first place. I left however, knowing that it was the evaluation that I should have been the priority.

I left with a new diagnosis for my injury and scheduled an appointment for next week for a full evaluation that will hopefully confirm the diagnosis as well as figure out why I haven’t been able to do push-ups for the past three months without shoulder pain.

What I liked about Finish Line Physical Therapy is not only is it a beautiful sunny space, but most of the people who work there are athletes themselves. In fact two of them that I spoke with are running the New York City 1/2 Marathon this weekend.

Anyhow, I’m hoping this is my solution and I can finally rid myself of this nagging injury and train my brains out.

I met one of Finish Line PT’s Physical Therapists at a free JackRabbit session last year, where I was the only attendee – yay for one-on-one advice and consultation! While I didn’t need to go to PT (though this was the first time I asked about foot numbness, which continues, and I still think his answers were right on and I’m going to have to see a neurologist), I really enjoyed talking to him and meeting several of their staff at the JackRabbit running show. And I remember they had the AlterG Treadmill. Hope next week’s evaluation reveals answers for you!

Let me know how your experience is there. I am in so much pain these days when I run that I’ve decided I need to take a break for a month. I have been in tears over it! Perhaps this is where I need to go to get my running analyzed and figure out why my body is breaking down!

Hope you get some answers! I <3 Finish Line so much. They helped my knee/hip issues really really quickly. I went to Danielle, but I've heard they're all great. (Danielle's probably about to or has already left on maternity leave!)

I would LOVE to try an Alter G treadmill…or have one placed in my apartment. Just saying. Maybe I should look into a consultation about my gait because clearly something isn’t going so right with my back. Fingers crossed they take my insurance?
