The New York Road Runner’s Fifth Avenue Mile race couldn’t have come at a better time.
After my physical therapist told me to take the week off from working out, this was the only race I could justify running. I began devising a plan for this race just after I crossed the finish line in 2010. Clearly, those plans along with all my other lofty running goals for 2011 have changed. Despite that, I was excited to be a part of this fun race.
Injuries are never fun, but they don’t feel like such a big deal when your friends are also recovering from injuries of their own. I met up with Melissa and Erica before the race so we could stick together for the 1600 meter run.
Together we navigated the crowd and tried to contain a 9:00/mile pace, but the adrenaline of the day didn’t allow us to take it quite as easy as planned. Hopefully, none of us regret the faster pace tomorrow.
The one mile race also gave me a chance to test out the Champion running clothes that were sent to me as a part of the Champion Shape Your Life Blogger Ambassador Program.
Today I wore the Double Dry Relaxed 4″ Women’s Sport Short, the Double Dry Training V-Neck T Shirt, and the Double Dry Spot Comfort Max-Support Sports Bra.
The shorts fit well and remind me of Nike’s tempo track short. The only difference is that there isn’t a pocket. The shorts are cut so that they didn’t ride up in between my thighs, which is always a good thing. The only thing I didn’t like is the lack of pockets.
The top did it’s job and wicked the sweat away. I think it’s a nice affordable top that would make a good addition to any standard workout wardrobe, but I wasn’t super crazy about the cut.
The sports bra just doesn’t work for me. As I said earlier this week, when it comes to sports bras and running I need a bra that comes in a specific size. This bra only comes in small, medium, large, x-large which doesn’t work so well for me.
There’s another short race next weekend (1.7 miles) that really makes me appreciate the NYRR and all the races they hold throughout the year. Despite the fact that I’m missing my goal race, I’m still able to be a part of the running community and run races.

This is a fun one but yeah, it’s easy to get carried away with a crowd. Sorry to read the injury has forced you out of the marathon 🙁

Glad you at least got to get out & do a little & have some fun with friends!

I thought you looked really cute in the Champion get-up! Pity about the lack of pockets though. That’s the first thing I look for when considering running bottoms.

Thanks, Sam!

Bummer you can’t do the marathon, but at least you are still able to do shorter races. I had signed up for the 1.7 + Grete’s Gallop and am super-bummed that NYRR only lets you do one of those.

I was so surprised to hear about that.
