10 Essential Items for Summer Marathon Training

Reebok Running Essentials Printed Short – These shorts are the right length and right price! They also don’t ride up. The pocket-less style is perfect for shorter, mid-week training runs.

Nathan’s SpeedShot Plus Insulated Flask – When it heats up outside, this water bottle is great to carry with you on long runs. The pocket is a great place to store gels, keys and cash.

Organic Gatorade – Finally, a cleaned up version of gatorade! What’s not to love about an old-time favorite getting a much needed upgrade?

Coola Sunscreen – This goes on like a moisturizer, doesn’t bead up on you skin or sting your eyes. It’s pricey, but so so good!

Vega Protein Powder – Post-run smoothies are a great way to get in nutrients and protein after a long run. For a plant-based protein powder, this is rather good!

Mini tubes of Aquaphor – These will change your life. Carry one with you on your long runs or even during your race to use on any hot spots that are getting chaffed. It’s also great for protecting lips from the sun and wind.

Training Journal – You probably already know about this journal, but if you’ve never used it before, I highly recommend it! Online training logs are great, but there’s just something really great about putting pen to paper and hashing out your runs and goals.

Oiselle Roga Visor – Keep the sun off your face and stay cool with this visor. This one is lightweight and adjustable.

Saucony Bullet Tight Short – My all time favorite marathon shorts. They have tons of pockets, aren’t too short or too long. They sold out late last summer so I’m happy to see they’re back in stock this year.

Gu Roctane Salted Chocolate – Added electrolytes can come in handy during when you’re sweating more than normal during the summer months. Gu Roctane has extra sodium which can make a big difference in how you feel and perform during a long run.
