Fall means lots of good things for runners – cooler temps, faster paces and fall races.
No matter how you feel about the impending end of summer, fall is on it’s way. Personally, I love fall. As a run coach, the fall racing season is the most exciting time of year for my business. I look forward to the fall all year long and the same is true this year.
My least favorite part about fall is when the days start to get shorter and daylight is limited. Running in the dark can be fun, but it can also be scary at times and even dangerous.
Thankfully, here in NYC you’re never in total darkness and we have parks to run in and sidewalks to run on so we don’t have to be worried about oncoming traffic as much as people who live in less urban areas.
In high school, my cross country coach would assign a certain amount of miles to run over the weekend. Since I worked all day on Saturday and Sunday, I would cram in mileage Sunday night after work. One of my parents would drive behind me and shine their headlights onto the street so I could see where I was going and wouldn’t run into trouble.
I have no idea what kind of nighttime running gear was available in the 90’s, but I’m guessing there weren’t many options.
Luckily, running in the dark today doesn’t require having someone follow you in the dark to keep safe.
