I use to think I enjoyed shorter marathon training cycles, but I’ve learned I really enjoy having ample time to prepare. It gives me peace of mind. This way I have plenty of time to make up a missed run due to illness, snow, or lame excuses.
Since finding out I am going to run the LA Marathon, I’ve felt like I’m behind. I thought LA would be my goal race, but the idea of having to play catch-up by following a shorter than normal training schedule left me feeling exceptionally stressed out.
Last week while doing an easy run along the East River, it became clear to me I needed to let go of the idea of pr-ing in LA and focus on running a strong race in Boston. I’ll use LA as a long training run, take an extra week to recover then build back up. Since both courses are a net downhill, I’m hoping running LA will be a great way to prep for Boston.
This probably should have been my plan of attack all along, but my ego really wanted to race in LA. As soon as I figured this out, I felt much more relaxed about spring training. It also sits well with me because it means I don’t have to run as many long runs (what a relief!)!
On another note, I’m happy to report last weekend’s was a success! I hope this trend continues well into April.
I’ll close this post with the song on my running playlist that never fails to make me laugh mid-run.

Sometimes we have to let go of goals for now – not because we can’t do it but because its safer and it will STILL happen! I think you made a good decision – Good luck on both – I will be there cheering everyone on at Boston, my hubs is running it!

I think it’s amazing how intuitive we become about our training over time. It sounds like you have a great mindset to make both races exactly what you want!

I think that is a smart approach, and with this winter we’re having, who needs extra long runs on the schedule! I think boston will rock for you.

I think that’s a good approach… the excuse of not having to run a long run because of the weather is a good one. I signed up for my half a long time before I need to start training, and kind of wish I started when I signed up. Although I think choosing the Boston Marathon as your strong race is a good idea despite of training. The atmosphere of Boston that day is going to be unbelievable… That alone will carry you through!! 🙂

Thanks! Maybe I didn’t word this post well. I should be well prepared for Boston, just not for pr-ing in LA!
