Say it, Do it! {podcasts on the run}

{If you’re new to SIDI here’s some info: At the beginning of each week on FCITC “Say it, Do it” is a chance for us to commit to our workouts for the week by saying them out loud here and keeping each other accountable.}

I’m still amped up after my late morning run with Abby. We meet up in a snowy and brisk Central Park for a little tempo-ish run. I was so glad she let me tag along!

After running around in circles yesterday listening to podcasts bored out of my mind, I knew I needed a running partner for today. Thank goodness Abby’s schedule lined up with mine.

Let’s talk about those podcasts for a second. I generally don’t run with music because it annoys me and I can never figure out exactly what type of music I would actually enjoy listening to on a long run. I also don’t generally love doing long runs exclusively in Central Park, because it’s boring. However, running on the East or West side by the water can be miserable in the cold so I decided to avoid running East or West. I took Kat’s advice and uploaded a few podcasts to my iphone.

Everything started out great. The first podcast was Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! It’s hilarity left me laughing out loud like a lunatic. The second podcast was This American Life. It left me feeling like I could really get into this whole listening and learning thing while running (multi-tasking at its finest!).

Since I took a few pit-stops during this run I still had two miles to go when my third and final podcast came on, Freakonomics. It started out okay, but then a few minutes in they began discussing a previous podcast about quitting. At this point I had reached the backside of the Central Park loop by Lasker’s Rink and was headed southeast (which is a long gradual hill). Just at the moment I wanted to quit running a woman came on discussing how she quit running and how it was the best thing she ever did!

Next time I download something to listen to on the run, it will be a book that has nothing to do with quitting or running!

Despite the fact that I had to take a day off to rest my foot, I managed to get in the majority of my runs. Overall, I hit my mileage goal for the week and made sure I didn’t miss my strength workouts.

This week I might start tracking how much time I spend foam-rolling and stretching before and after my run. I was given a new-ish routine at PT this week and it feels like a part-time job it takes so much time! If anyone ever thinks running is a simple sport, tell them they are wrong!

Workouts for the week:

  • Monday: Rest
  • Tuesday: Strength + Tempo
  • Wednesday: Spin
  • Thursday: Strength + Speed
  • Friday: Rest or Spin
  • Saturday & Sunday: a little up in the air, but will do one long run of 15 miles and one easy 8 miler

What workouts are you committed to this week? Let me know in the comment section or if you’re doing your own SIDI it post this week leave me the link so I can check it out!

I listen to podcasts when I run, too. Wait, Wait is one of my favorites. This American Life is hit or miss for me–definitely a HIT if I like the topic, but if it happens to be something I’m not interested in… then it doesn’t do the trick. Another one I really like for running is Jillian Michaels’ podcast–if you’re a fan of hers, that is!

Hi Jess, love your blog! One of the podcasts I’ve started listening to when I run is Trail Runner Nation (http://trailrunnernation.com/podcasts/). The hosts are pretty funny at times and they have a lot of cool guests including some great ultrarunners and trail runners. They’re long too (most are well over an hour) so it can really help the miles fly by!

I love the Wait, Wait podcast. This week I’m committing to running after taking most of last week off.

My favorite part of the week is SIDI! http://emilyruns.com/2013/02/03/say-it-do-it-v-5/
And I might have to start listening to podcasts instead of pandora. I keep finding things I don’t like when I’m running! No fun! Looks like a great week ahead!

I keep meaning to try the podcast or audio book thing. It seems like it would be a really nice change from my normal music listening.

Podcasts are a great way to mix things up!

I injured my knee over this weekend, so not too much going out workout wise. Sigh

Oh, thank you for this! I saw this earlier today, so I decided to try a Jillian Michaels podcast for my short run to see if I would like it for my longer runs. I think I do! How exciting! Now I have to work back up to actually doing long runs.

I’ve been kind of a slacker lately, we moved, it’s cold, wah wah. This week I am ramping up to start a new training plan next week for a 25k. New distance for me!
Monday – 30 Day Shred, 3 miles (done)
    Tuesday – 30 Day Shred
Wednesday – 30 Day Shred, some amount of miles more than 3
    Thursday – 30 Day Shred
Friday – 30 Day Shred, 5 miles or so
Saturday – 30 Day Shred, yoga
Sunday – 30 Day Shred, 5 miles or so

I’ve never thought about a podcast. I need my beats. And the bluesier the better. Black Keys, etc! The gritty guitar keeps me going when I’m hurting.

    Monday: Strength Training
    Tuesday: Swim
    Wednesday: Rest
    Thursday: Strength Training
    Friday: Swim
    Saturday: Run & Strength Training
    Sunday: Run & Strength Training

If you liked “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me,” try “Car Talk” (also an NPR show). I use the NPR app for my iPhone and listen to the 2 latest for free. Those guys are hilarious. You don’t even have to know anything about cars to enjoy! They’re friggin’ funny. 🙂

Ha! Definitely don’t listen to a pod cast telling you to stop running! Where do you download pod casts from? I just use pandora so I’m kind of illiterate with this whole downloading thing.

Work outs this week… I have 4 mile runs just about every day and then Sunday I want to switch the 4 miles to something like 8. We will see!
