Running in the Heat is Prep Work

I think 80% of New Yorkers are hating this heat wave we’re having. Sure, I too have complained about it a little, but for the most part I’m thankful for the warmth and the humidity.

Why?

Because that if I’m smart about hydration and pacing, it will make me a stronger runner.

I’m not the best at doing speedwork consistently, but I love a challenging run. I think that’s why I ran when it was 100 degrees last year and I know that’s why I run when it’s 7 degrees.

I love the heat, I secretly love a hilly course, and I love running with faster friends. I also love running my guts out during a race that started as a “fun run” simply because I decided to mid-race.

I try to keep pushing when my runs get hard because I know the pain and drama a day-to-day run brings won’t compare to the pain 26.2 miles will inflict.

I think people think that if you’re a runner your a marathoner. Well, yes I’ve ran a few marathons, but I’m not a marathoner. In fact I haven’t ran a marathon since 2004. Running this marathon in November scares me.

My big goals for this race might even scare me more than the 26.2 miles. I realize this journey began last year, but I’ve come to the realization that I needed this extra year to re-prioritize and train differently.

I’m saying all this to tell you there might be a lot more personalized running commentary coming your way in the days to come and I hope you’ll stick around!

Thanks for always cheering me on!

Heat, hills, if you tell me you enjoy sprints we are in a fight… those are my 3 least favorite things as a runner. I want flat, comfortable pace, and nice 50ish temperature.

I love all the running posts. I can live vicariously through you until I get over my anemia my doc has advised other forms of working out. BOO! But I have to listen to the experts.

Good luck with all the training! You got this Jess! 🙂

Minneapolis got hit with that heat on Monday. I refrained from running outdoors that day because I’m pretty sure I would have gotten heat stroke! I give you mad props for sticking to your routine 🙂
