For as long as I’ve been running, I have wished for a shoe that could track its own mileage. At long last, that dream has come true with Under Armour’s SpeedForm Gemini 2 Record- Equipped running shoe.
With a retail price of $149.99 this shoe will store data from your run and download the stats from your run via bluetooth to the mapmyrun app on android or apple devices. The shoe automatically begins to record a run once you’ve been running for three consecutive minutes at a pace at or below 11:00 per mile. If you are running below an 11:00 mile the shoe will still capture your run data by simply hitting the start button on the MapMyRun app.
Here’s a screenshot of the data recorded during my run at the launch event last week at the Under Armour House in Soho.
Running stats recorded include:
- pace per mile
- total time ran
- average pace of the run
- a map of the run
- elevation stats
- calories burned
- cadence
After the shoe has been paired with MapMyRun the user no longer has to carry a phone or wear a watch to track their runs. Bluetooth technology allows you to sync the data from your run with the app after the run is complete. The shoe can store up to five runs at a time which means you don’t have to connect to MapMyRun after every single run. And yes, there is enough memory to record your marathon training long runs!
Unlike a GPS watch, these shoes do not need to be charged. When a user has run a total of 450 miles in the shoe, an email alert is sent to the wearer letting them know it’s time for new shoes.
The shoe itself seems to run a bit small. I had to go up a 1/2 size from my normal running shoe size. It has an 8mm heel to toe drop and weighs approximately 8 ounces.
This was my first time ever running in a pair of UA shoes and I didn’t even think about them. In fact I actually forgot I was wearing a shoe that was new to me on our test run. I’m generally very “princess and the pea” when it comes to running shoes therefore, I was surprised at how great they felt during the first run. I am currently running in shoes with a similar heel to toe drop which I’m sure is a contributing factor. I’m looking forward to putting more miles on this shoe.
If you normally run in a stability shoe or a shoe with a higher heel to toe drop, this might not be the right shoe for you. But, if you run in a lower profile shoe and like a bit of cushion this model is definitely worth checking out.
The shoes go on sale February 29, 2016.
* I received a complimentary pair of shoes to beta test the new Map My Run App and SpeedForm Gemini 2.
