Figuring Out What It Is I Need

Do you ever ache for a change, but you aren’t quite sure what that change is suppose to be?

Right now I’m aching. I’m feeling burned out in most areas of my life. I’m trying to listen intently to the voices deep inside my head to see what it is I’m suppose to do next and I think I’m figuring it out.

One of the things I keep hearing over and over again is a craving to get back on my yoga mat. It’s been a year since I’ve practiced consistently. Practicing yoga with hamstring tendonitis has proven to be worthless cause. Yet, my hamstring might finally be ready.

Nearly exactly a year ago heading to my last yoga class before realizing it was a no-go for my hamstring.

What I’ve missed from yoga is the stillness and focus it brings into my life. I once heard a mentor say that teaching group fitness classes is perfect for someone with attention problems because you’re never really in any place for very long and rarely in a moment even when it’s happening. She went on to explain that when teaching you jump from thought to thought as you walk around the room, cue, help people with form, while simultaneously thinking about what’s next. Forty-five minutes when class is  over you walk out of the gym and on to your next client, class, workout, etc.

Without  yoga practice and consistent meditation, my wandering mind wanders even more to a point that even drives my sweet Husband crazy.

Tonight I had ten minutes to spare at the gym before teaching class, so I plugged my ipod into the stereo and blasted Corey Chisel & the Wandering Sons instead of David Guetta (someone should try to make a remix with both those artists just to see what would happen).

True story I love both cheesy pop and folk music equally.

It turns out all it took to make my tight hips and wandering mind feel a little bit better was a quick solo yoga flow.

In an effort to feed myself with one of the things my mind and body currently need, I’m going to seek out a gentle, traditional yoga class in my neighborhood. I think it’s just the thing I need.

Great post. I have very similar feelings . . . and I need to get back to some consistent yoga. I always feel better when I do.

I’ve actually been trying to get myself to get into yoga for a while now. I went to a couple classes a few weeks ago but haven’t been back since. It’s not that I don’t like it..I actually loved it. It’s the fact that I don’t feel like I can fit it in to my overall fitness routine. I’m training for an iron man, attempting to not lose muscle mass in the process so have been hitting the weights hard, and take my much needed rest days have become a requirement….it seems like I’m just too busy to work yoga into this equation, although I’d love to….any advice?

I totally hear ya! It’s so hard to fit everything in. I think the best way to do it is to find a good download, like Yoga Download. They have short 10-15 minute routines, 30 minute and even 60 minute ones. I’m finding that even a little yoga really helps me even if I can’t find time to get to a class very often. Ten-30 minutes at home seems to be a good way to fit it all in.

I’ve been to yoga only a few times and although I’m not great at the poses I loved the peace and mindfulness of it. I really need to get into a regular schedule!

I am so in a similar head space. What an inspirational post – yoga/pilates is such a beautiful exercise. And like you said, sometimes it’s ok to slow down and move to a quieter beat.

I can definitely relate! I need some more yoga in my life. I think that running and consistent exercise really helps you become in-tune with your body. It’s so awesome that you were able to pinpoint what you needed. Glad your hamstring is better so you can practice yoga!

I’ve been feeling similar lately – super burnt out in all aspects of my life and craving some quiet and peace. I haven’t practiced yoga since the beginning of the year before I hurt my knee and went to my first class in month on Tuesday. I could literally feel my body lengthen and create space in my body. It was glorious.

Great post! I know what you mean my head has been all over the place and it is no accident that I have put in the backburner any mindfulness practice. Whether is meditation and/or yoga. Thank you for this reminder 🙂
