Last night I finished reading Dominique Moceanu’s memoir, Off Balance. Last month I realized I hadn’t read a single fiction book so, I made it my goal to read one asap. When I read the preview version of Dominique’s book on my iPad, I knew it had to be my next read. I’m giving up on the idea of reading fiction for now.
Never being an elite athlete of any sort, I was surprised by how much I related to parts of Dominique’s story. Many of the feelings she had as child resonated with my own story, despite the fact that are lives are very different.
The book reveals surprising details of her family life and life in the gym with the famous coaching duo, the KΓ‘rolyi’s. It’s a fascinating story that makes me wish more Olympic athlete’s would tell their tales of heartache and triumph.
The book is quite different from other books I’ve recently read written by other athletes. Usually, I finish the book feeling inspired to work harder towards my fitness goals. This book isn’t really that type of read however, it is a fascinating tale of an extremely talented and determined woman, which in turn is inspiring on an entirely different level.
If you live in NYC, I invite you to join my monthly book club starting this fall. We’ll be reading books that inspire us to go the extra mile and become better versions of ourselves. If interested leave a comment below or shoot me an email to stay updated on where we’ll be meeting and what our first book will be. I hope you’ll join me!
I’ve been looking for a book club in the city, or even Brooklyn. I can’t seem to find one that doesn’t happen on an odd time (i.e. during the day on a week day). I’d definitely be interested in joining π
I’d love to join in for this. Please let me know when you start it up!
Can you recommend other books by Olympians that you’ve particularly enjoyed?
Yes, Age is Just a Number by Dara Torres.
Great idea! Would love to receive info when you have more details!
xoxo

I am interested in joining your book club. Please add me to your list. I bought Dominque’s book after I saw a news special about her sister. I have not read it yet. If you decide to read some fiction, Gone Girl lives up to the hype. It’s a relatively quick read.
I would definitely be interested in joining! This type of book club is exactly what I have been looking for. Can’t wait for the details. Thanks!
Great idea! I maybe interested in joining as well!
Thank you for organizing!
I love this idea! I would love to join, I’ve been toying with the idea of starting my own book club. Please let me know when you decide on a meeting time / place.
Would love to be kept up to date as well!
I’m definitely interested–and my company pubbed Dominique’s book so I could bring copies if you like. But I’m interested in all types of inspirational reads, fitness and otherwise!

I would love to join the book club. I’ve been looking for something like this for a while.
Great idea and I’d love to join!
Would love more info about your book club! Any thoughts to discussions during a group run? I have been of the mind to start a running book club (not books about running, but running while discussing all kinds of books) for several years but didn’t know enough runners to make it work . . . something tells me you do!
Either way, I am interested.
Hey Stephanie! That sounds like a fun idea. However, it may be difficult because everyone would need to be running at the same pace. Conversely, I really wanted to start something that didn’t revolve around doing exercise. Plus it’s nice to see people in their non-running clothes for a change. π
I read Off Balance earlier this summer, I loved it!! It made watching the gymnastics this summer so much different for me, especially every time they showed Karolyi’s on TV. I think a book club sounds like such a great idea π
Interested… would depend on the day/time but i’d try to make it work π
Would love to join!!!
Always wanted to join a book club, please let me know when you start it up.
