With marathon training season kicking off for so many runners, Jess and I thought this would be an ideal time to provide everyone with some extra resources that could be helpful for training. We checked in with some of our running friends to see which apps they recommend. Let us know in the comments section which one is your favorite!
Favorite running apps: Strava & Spotify/Podcast
What do they do: Strava- It provides a lot of details from my work out that no other program can offer. I can create my route before heading out and look at all the data after.
Spotify/Podcast– It syncs with your cadence so you always will have the right rhyme for your workout. Pick between your own songs, a mix of random songs, or pre-recorded workout songs.
Why are they your favorite: For anyone who loves data, Strava is your app. Spotify’s new running app is perfect for those who want to listen to music. Podcasts for me are great for long runs.
Favorite running app: Garmin Connect (it’s a free app but you need a Garmin device for it to be used!)
What does it do: It pulls the data from all of my Garmin devices (I use an activity tracker 24/7 and GPS when I run). It gives me a wide range of info for each of my runs – pace, distance, elevation, heart rate, course, time, temperature, etc.
Why is it your favorite: The newer watches have bluetooth capabilities which allows the data to be automatically uploaded to Garmin Connect on your phone – no more wires or cables or having to sit in front of your computer to view it all. I can see all the data moments after I finish my run!
Favorite running app: Garmin Connect
What does it do: Shows me all the data from my runs, maps, elevation, pace, etc.
Why is it your favorite: When I’m speed training, I’m able to see my data in graphs and maps, which I actually prefer. Plus, now it’s all wireless so I don’t have to download anything.
Favorite running app: McRun
What does it do: You enter the time and distance of your most current race. From there, it will predict your race times for other distances and also give you training paces.
Why is it your favorite: I struggle with figuring out how quickly I should be able to race shorter distances based on my longer race paces. This helps.
Favorite running app: Nike+ Running
What does it do: The app allows you to track a variety of metrics for your run–time, distance, pace, calories burned, etc. to help you reach new goals. It also syncs to watches and has a social component.
Why is it your favorite: I like using the Nike app because it acts as a diary
of my training workouts and milestones. Each run is saved as a map of your route, so you can revisit your favorites later.
Favorite running app: Nike+ Running
What does it do: I use it to log my miles on the road, compete with friends, and track the wear and tear on my shoes.
Why is it your favorite: I love it because it’s social. Lots of friends are on it so I can see who’s got the most miles each month–which inspires me to stay on top. And it’s got just enough data to keep me going without too much to make it all science and no fun.
Favorite running app: Charity Miles
What does it do: For every mile you run (or walk or bike) you earn money for a charity of your choice, courtesy of their sponsors. As you walk, run or bike, the app will track your distance and you’ll earn money for your charity: 10¢ per mile for bikers; 25¢ per mile for walkers and runners, all up to $1,000,000.
Why is it your favorite: If you run, walk or bike anyway, I cannot think of why you wouldn’t use this app! You can help others while also hitting your own personal fitness goals.

An App I really like is myfitnesspal. It’s not directly a running app, but it syncs with a lot of running trackers to help you meet your nutrition goals based on your activity levels. If you haven’t tried that app out you really need to.
