Race Pace Training Diaries: Meet Jackie

Training Diaries Hello, fellow Race Pace Runners! My name is Jackie, and I’ve been friends with Jess since fall of 2007, thanks to our shared love of all things running, cycling, and New York City. I’m so happy to have her as my coach while I train for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon DC this spring.

I’ve been a runner for as long as I can remember, but I took a break from serious racing a few years ago when I moved to Maryland for graduate school. Well, I turned thirty last month (!!) and one of my goals for the year is to race a half marathon. And I do mean race: my goal finishing time is 1:45, which is a lot faster than I’ve been running lately so it’s a little scary to say aloud! To set this half marathon PR I’ll have to hold an 8-minute-mile pace for all 13.1 miles, and I know getting there will take more than just running. I’ll need to incorporate speed work and strength training into my workouts if I want to get faster. I feel so much more confident about my training knowing I have Jess in my corner to motivate me and keep me on target!

I had a friend who didn’t need to train all that hard and was able to complete 10 miles in less than an hour – but he threw it all away for computer games & potato chips. I don’t know whether or not that is funny or sad?
